Ms. Reid was born in Hanceville, AL, and passed away peacefully at her home in Tarrant at the age of 99. Ms. Reid is survived by her sister, Teenie Ruth Bailey; nieces, Sylvia Monaghan, Rebecca Linton, and Sandra Reid; nephews, Vernon Morgan, Roger Bailey and Ricky Reid, as well as special friend and caregiver Gloyce Austin (Alice). She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Lillie Reid; sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Morgan and Myra Jean Downey, brother, Roger Reid, niece, Peggy Brown and nephews Melvin Morgan and Doug Bailey.
Ms. Reid was a longtime resident of Tarrant where for decades she was partner and owner of the Doll-Up Beauty Shop and active in the Tarrant business community. During World War II she served her country as a part of the “Rosie-the-Riviter” group, working for the Hayes Aircraft Corporation in Birmingham.
Known for her astounding memory and quick wit, she was the pillar of strength, informal historian, advisor/helper, and chief caregiver of her extended family. Ms. Reid was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, seldom missing a televised game, and knew the teams records, batting averages and the personalities of their players.
Services for Ms. Reid will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel, with Rev. Bill Johnston officiating. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the services.
