On October 29, 2023, Clay Clifford Johnson, Jr., 76, of Mount Olive, Alabama, passed away at home, surrounded by his family who loved him very much. Clay preceded his wife of 22 years, Sheila, as he entered his eternal home in Heaven. Clay has now been reunited with Gloria, the wife of his youth. He is now in the presence of God and has seen the face of Jesus.
Clay was born at home in Pinson on January 10, 1947. He graduated from Tarrant High School and went to Jefferson State Community College. Clay retired from US Steel, where he spent his career as an Inspector. He was an active member of Gardendale First Baptist Church for over 45 years, and when he could no longer attend in person, he and Sheila faithfully watched the livestream together at home. He loved to watch TV – his favorites were Westerns, Andy Griffith, FOX News, and Alabama Football. He also loved to read history works and Harlan Coben novels. He loved music, especially Guy Penrod, Roy Orbison, and Alabama.
Clay is preceded in death by his parents, Clay Sr. and Geneva Johnson, his wife Gloria Johnson, his aunt Virginia Campbell, his sister Wanda Brooks and her husband Sam, and his niece Sandy Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Scarborough Johnson; his brother, Mike Johnson (Rita); son Derek Johnson (Crissy); his daughters, Stacy Allen (David), Shelley Burkett (Mike), and Julie Harris (Bryan); his many grandchildren, Audie (Megan), Emily, Jackson, Mary Elizabeth, Nicholas, Reid, Eden, Nathan, Jenna, and Nolan; his great-grandson, Foster; many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended friends and family.
Clay’s family would like to express our extreme gratitude to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the outstanding care given to all of us during Clay’s final weeks and days.
The family will hold a private graveside memorial in Clay’s honor. To all of those who loved Clay, we thank you.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsgardendalechapel.com for the Johnson family.
