Schauss Farragut Graben, 92, passed away peacefully December 17, 2013. He was born on January 24, 1921 in Clay County. Mr. Graben was a graduate of Lineville High School. He was a long time resident of Etowah County and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Mr. Graben loved God, his family, and his country. He was very proud that he was a veteran of World War II serving from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater. He was a gunner on the USS Concord, a light cruiser.
Mr. Graben was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Frances Sewell Graben; his parents, Young Louis and Idora Graben; four brothers: Eral, Earl, Paul, and Louis Graben; four sisters: Inez Houston, Vera Pope, Winelle Garrett, and Robbie Crissey.
Left to cherish his memory is a daughter, Gail Graben Smith (William), a son, Stanley C. Graben (Sheila); three granddaughters: Jennifer Smith Sanders (Todd), Houston, TX, Andrea Smith Brenner (Nathan), Franklin, NC, and Kelly Graben Knight (Jason) Cartersville, GA; 8 great-granddaughters: Miriam, Anna Gail, and Leah Sanders; Sarah Katherine, Elizabeth, and Abigail Brenner; and Emily and Claire Knight. He is also survived by his sister, Weltha Barnes, Montgomery, AL, and a host of other family members and friends.
The family of Mr. Graben is grateful for the long caring ministry of Fairview Baptist Church, Reverend Robert and Faye Thornton, and the many people at William F. Green State Veterans Home, Bay Minette, AL, who lovingly took care of him for twenty-two months, Covenant Hospice, and the endless devotion of his family and friends.
Pallbearers are William Smith, Phillip Sitz, Randy Sitz, Todd Sanders, Dr. Nathan Brenner, and Jason Knight.
Funeral services will be at Collier-Butler on Monday, December 23, 2013. Visitation will be from 11:30-12:30 with the memorial services following visitation. Reverend Robert Thornton will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
