Sandra Keenum Elkins, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Southside, Alabama, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the age of 72, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on January 27, 1952, in Gadsden, Alabama, Sandra was the embodiment of warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.
Sandra is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Eddie Elkins, and their children, David (Lindsay) Elkins and Heather (Grant) Edwards. Her memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, Walker (Destinee) McCarver, Zachary McCarver, Autumn Elkins, and Addison Elkins, her chosen grandchildren, Brody Edwards and Jenna Mae Edwards, as well as her great-granddaughter, who was her sunshine and pride and joy, Paisley McCarver. Sandra found immense joy in her role as a grandmother, and her love for her family was evident in every moment shared. She was also survived by her siblings, Lisa (Marrion Talley), David (Lisa) Keenum, and Randy (Terri) Keenum.
Preceding her in death were her daughter, Shannon Michelle Elkins, her siblings, Sharron Keenum and Ricky Keenum, and her grandparents, Jessie and Betty Keenum. Sandra faced these losses with grace, strength, and an enduring spirit that inspired those who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Akisanya and the dedicated healthcare professionals who cared for Sandra over the years. Special thanks also go to SouthernCare New Beacon Hospice for their compassionate support during Sandra's final weeks. Chaplin John Guthery provided spiritual comfort, and the family is grateful for his presence during this difficult time.
Sandra Keenum Elkins will be remembered for her boundless love, her nurturing spirit, and the countless cherished memories she leaves behind. She touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her and will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Sandra's life will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Sandra's honor. After the service, the family invites all family and friends to have a meal to celebrate her life at the Southside Community Center.
