Born on March 19, 1943, to Joseph Wiley and Mamie Stallings Hammond, Pat was a proud native of Gadsden. He graduated from Etowah High School in 1961 and attended Gadsden State Community College before serving his country in the United States Navy for two years. Upon returning home, Pat opened a barber shop in North Gadsden, but spent most of his life in sales, eventually opening Hammond Auto Sales and operating it for 20 years.
Pat was a member of Whorton Bend Memorial Church. He was known for his love of Alabama Football, but above all, he was a proud Papa, always supporting his children and grandchildren in everything they did. His family was his greatest joy, and his love for them was evident in all aspects of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Peggy; daughters Vicky (Tim) Porter and Amanda (Craig) Snead; grandchildren Ali Porter, Ellie Porter, Patrick “Wilson” Snead, Avery Snead, and Audry Snead; and sisters Patsy Stephens, Julia Scott, and brother Lamar Hammond. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, his Wednesday night dinner crew, and special friends and travel buddies, Scott and Sue Hardee and David and Pat Herrod.
He was preceded in death by his twin granddaughters Addison Quinn and Catherine Lincy Snead, his parents, Joseph Wiley and Mamie Stallings Hammond, and several siblings: Joyce (James) Fleming, Josephine (Willis) Richards, Mamie Johnson, Jeannette Staples, Nancy (Jerry) Vice, Bill Hammond, and Joseph (Faye) Hammond.
Visitation will be held at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 12:00 pm, with the service following at 2:00 pm. Following the service will be a graveside at Rainbow Memorial Gardens
Pallbearers will be sons-in-law Tim Porter and Craig Snead; grandson Wilson Snead; nephews Walter Staples and Mike Richards; and great-nephew Chris Staples.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Shaily Lakhanpal and the staff at Alabama Oncology, the Whorton Bend Fire Department, Tommy and Joyce Hughes, and all the neighbors on Montclair Drive for their support during this time.
