Judy Hill Campbell was born December 18, 1943, on Sand Mountain, AL, the seventh of eight children to Fred and Ruth Hill. Judy grew up in the Hokes Bluff community of Alford’s Bend, and in recent years, she returned to her childhood homeplace. On Tuesday afternoon, April 19, while at the farmhouse on the hill she held so dearly, she peacefully left this world to be welcomed into her heavenly home.
Judy came to know the Lord as a child, at First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff, and as an adult she became a long time member of Rainbow City Presbyterian Church. She is a graduate of Hokes Bluff High School, class of 1961, where she proudly wore green and white as head cheerleader for the Hokes Bluff Eagles. After high school, Judy worked as a sales clerk for Rutenberg’s of Gadsden, then as a secretary at Gadsden City Hall, and years later, she campaigned for a seat on the Gadsden City Council.
For over a decade, Judy owned and operated Advanced Home Care, serving Etowah County and surrounding communities, caring for her patients with individual attention, love and kindness. Her business reflected her heart – genuine, thoughtful, and always mindful of the personal connection to each family she served.
Judy leaves behind a beautiful legacy of deep love for family and friends. Her smile and magnetic personality were an invitation for all to know her, and her thoughtful heart kept her friends and loved ones close. She valued time spent connecting with those she loved, whether in person or on a phone call, text or a note in the mail, she enjoyed letting others know she was thinking of them.
Her special love language was spoken through her appreciation for food and fellowship, often recalling and sharing treasured memories while gathered around a good meal with generations of family to taste time tested recipes, and hear colorful stories served on the side. She loved to reminisce on days gone by, and in doing so, she passed along a rich heritage for her family to hold and treasure.
Judy made a formative and lasting impact in so many lives, as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was deeply proud of her daughter and son-in-law, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She provided endless support, encouragement and love. She had a big sense of humor and was always planning for a fun time ahead. She was a generous giver, continually looking for ways to lift others up and help others in need. She patiently listened and empathized with people during life’s challenges, and equally celebrated happiness and achievement for others. She thrived on making others feel special, loved and appreciated. Judy is treasured by all who know and love her, and she will be deeply missed.
Judy is preceded in death by her husband of more than forty years, Hugh Campbell, her parents Fred and Ruth Hill, her sister June Hill, brothers Billy (Betty Jo) Hill, Jimmy (Mary Ann) Hill, Charles Hill, and Fred Hill, Jr., and her brothers-in-law Hugh Wallace and James Hanks. She is survived by her daughter Valerie (Scott) Hughen, her precious grandsons Hill, Everett, Miles and Hutch Hughen, who affectionately knew their grandmother only as “Boody,” her sisters Mona Wallace and Jessie Hanks, her sisters-in-law Sherry Hill and Jackie Hill, and three generations of nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored.
A graveside service for family will be held on Saturday April 23 at 1:00pm at Forrest Cemetery. The Reverend Charles Smith will officiate. Judy’s nephews will be pallbearers. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00pm at Collier-Butler Funeral Home for all friends and family.
