Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Collier-Butler Funeral Chapel for George E. Hall, 84, of Southside, who passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Brother Allen Hudson will officiate. Burial will be at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mr. Hall was a 1949 graduate of Gadsden High School and attended the University of Alabama Extension Center in Gadsden, AL. He served in the U.S. Air Force; afterward he received a scholarship from Coach Phog Allen to play basketball at Kansas University. However, due to family matters, he was unable to continue. He then signed a professional contract with the Detroit Vagabond Kings, where he played for 2 seasons (1953-1954). He then played basketball for URW Local 12. He also enjoyed bowling and was known for bowling with his one hole bowling ball. Mr. Hall began working at Goodyear March 3, 1954 as a tire builder and worked numerous jobs in the plant before accepting a supervisor position and becoming a division superintendent. On July 1, 1977, he transferred to Danville, VA as production superintendent. In 1982 he transferred to Sydney, Australia as director of South Pacific Tires, Sydney, Australia. In 1984 he transferred to Wolverhampton, England as Director of United Kingdom Manufacturing. In 1988 he transferred to San Paulo, Brazil as Director of Latin America Manufacturing. In 1995 he retired from Goodyear with 44 years of service and returned to his home town of Gadsden, AL. From 1995-2000 he served as President of the Etowah County Sports Hall of Fame and in 2001 was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his parents, W.A. “Bill” and Irene Hall; and brother, James R. Hall.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie Hall; daughters, Candy (Phil) Michael, Dawn ( Jeff) Chappell, and Page (Simon) Carter; grandchildren, Heather (Hunter) Crumpton, Summer (Jason) Sauls, Justin (Alison) Mayo, Jamie (Annie) Dodd, and Cameron Carter; great-grandchildren, Brady and Colt Sauls, and Luke Mayo; sister, Joyce Theis; and brother, Charles W. (June) Hall.
Pallbearers will be Dougie Hill, Terry Harris, Bo Harris, Kelly Harris, Nick Hall, Jason Sauls, Clay Richardson, Colt Richardson, and Jerry Pruitt.
Honorary pallbearers are Weldon Birdwell, Bill Murdoch, Jim Seay, Jack Addison, Billy Clyde Stewart, Jim Gray, and Gary Watkins.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Etowah County Rescue Squad.
Special thanks to special chosen family member, Stephanie Robinson, who has helped our family through the past few years; and caregivers Vickie Waller and Gentiva Hospice.
The family will accept friends from 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. at the funeral home Saturday, prior to the service.
