Charles “Eddie” Roberts, age 74, of Gadsden, AL passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A graveside will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, AL. Allen McClellan will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is charge of arrangements.
Eddie graduated from Gaston High School in 1967. He received a baseball scholarship to Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, GA. After attending college, he enlisted in the 1st Infantry Division “Big Red One” of the United States Army. He served three years in the Army which included one year in Vietnam. After returning home from the Army, he married his high school sweetheart and celebrated 53 years of marriage. He worked and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
Eddie had a special love for baseball. He was especially proud to be a member of the 1964 Gadsden Pony League All-star Team that was runner-up in the Pony League world series in San Diego, CA. He received the most valuable player award of the tournament. He was a beloved husband, father, paw-paw, and friend to many. He will be dearly missed by all.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys Roberts; sister, Ann Shepherd; brothers, Ronnie Roberts, George Roberts, and Johnny Roberts.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Roberts; son, Blake (Heidi) Roberts; daughter, Jill (Lee) Graves; grandson, Tyler Roberts; granddaughter, Chloe Roberts; and brother, Jackie Roberts.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Roberts, Robin Roberts, Rodney Roberts, Zack Roberts, Greg Roberts, Hunter Christopher, and Hayden Christopher.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family wishes to express thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff at UAB Hospital, and special thanks to the CCU.
