Bill Bob Burgett checked out around noon on May 10, 2013. He was loved by everyone that had the fortune of knowing him. A kind generous man that would do anything for a friend, neighbor or, as he would say, “his kin”.
Bill was born on October 3, 1919 to Estella Maude (Russell) and Frank Adrian Burgett in Etowah County, Alabama. He lived in Gadsden his entire life, except for his 14 month stint at the retirement home in Centre, AL.
He was a Supervisor at Gulf State Steel until his retirement. He loved hosting pool parties at his house, wood working and gardening. Bill had a major green thumb and his yard won the Tuckahoe Heights beautification award multiple times.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Keith, David and Paige Garmon and by his son-in law Charles Wayne Garmon. Living to the ripe old age of 93 he was preceded in death by just about everyone else; his beloved wife Polly, his precious daughter Kay Garmon and all his siblings to include Frank and Adrian Burgett, Lora Phillips and Dot Patterson.
A celebration of his life will begin around 10:00 a.m. with a short service at 11:00 a.m. in the parlor of Collier-Butler Funeral Home. Please join us for a light brunch and feel free to share a special memory, poem or funny story. Bill was a poet, though most of us didn’t know it, so the family welcomes any positive expressions, just as he would have.
In lieu of flowers or memorial gifts, please pay it forward by showing kindness to an elderly neighbor or stranger. In Bill’s memory, please take a moment to brighten up someone else’s day, just as he did or donate to your favorite charity.
Bill will be placed to rest in the Garden of Hymns Section of Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden. Keeping with his social nature and his love for this community, the family welcomes you all to come by later and visit with him. Look for the likeness of Bill and Polly carved into a 7 foot stone of granite for all eternity.
