Barbara was married to the love of her life, Cecil Hood, for 55 years. She is survived by her (5) children; Susan Hood, Sarah Hood, Peggy (Donald) Gibson, Jeff Hood, Barbie (Frankie) Schomburg; (6) grandchildren Rick Rubrigi, Ramona (Tom) Gilmore, Sam Bone, Paige (Hunter) Hayes, Andrew Schomburg, Abby Schomburg, (8) Great-Grandchildren, (5) Great-Great grandchildren and numerous other family members.
A lifelong resident of Gadsden, Alabama, Barbara attended Gadsden High School. She enjoyed supporting local charities with donations she could make for children during Christmas. She was well known for support to loved ones that were no longer independent and “Shut-ins” with visits, meals and weekly cards. She was a devoted member of Bellevue Methodist (Falls Mountain Church) for 70+ years. She volunteered for over forty years at Riverview Regional Medical Center. She took great pride in wearing her pink volunteer jacket every Friday.
She loved spending time with family, shopping, cooking for holidays,and supporting her church. She loved sitting at the kitchen table for coffee and talks with family with a game of Chinese Checkers or Uno with grandchildren. Her favorite was a trip to Pigeon Forge, eating at Paula Dean’s restaurant and seeing a Temptations or Elvis show or a Saturday trip to Alabama Gift Company for any new treasures for her home.
Barbara grew up on Noccalula Falls Mountain and her parents owned and operated F.R. sims grocery store for over forty years. She met the love of her life at the grocery store. Barbara’s family also owned land where the city of Glencoe was established. Her family donated the land to support Glencoe Elementary School and Glencoe Cumberland Presbyterian Church. “Barbara Street” in Glencoe was named in her honor when this area was established.
The family would like to thank the following for all their care and support of our Mom during her recent health challenges: Dr. Akisanya and Kandi Ogle who she dearly loved, Amedisys Home Health, Southern Care Hospice, Angels of Healing Service and especially to Kayla Morris for strong support to our Mom and our family during recent weeks of decline.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at the Collier-Butler Chapel. The family will accept friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Barbara will be laid to rest at Crestwood cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to Falls Mountain Church. Pallbearers will be Jeff Hood, Rick Rubrigi, Frankie Schomburg, Andrew Schomburg, Donald Gibson, and Sam Bone.
