A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home for Anita Handley Chavers, 67, of Hokes Bluff, who passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022.
Anita was born July 30, 1955, in Gadsden, Alabama. She was a 1973 graduate of Hokes Bluff High School. After graduation, she attended Gadsden State Community College, obtaining her Associates Degree in Nursing. She later obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Samford University. Her career as a Registered Nurse in labor and delivery at Gadsden Regional Medical Center began in 1976 and spanned over 40 years until her retirement in 2016.
Always loving and kind, she was beloved by all who knew her. She was an active member of Hokes Bluff First United Methodist Church, the Agnes Lowery Sunday School Class and Women of Faith. She loved volunteering at Way of the Cross Ministries, helping those in need. She cherished her family and friends. She also had a soft spot in her heart for dogs, including her sweet Sophie who never left her side. She set a beautiful Christian example of love, kindness and humility throughout her life. She will be missed greatly, but we know she is home now, celebrating with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Dorothy Handley, brother, Ronnie Handley and father-in-law Joe Chavers.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, King Chavers; mother-in-law Carolyn Chavers; son Lacy (Suzy) Sexton, Wellington; daughter, Hannah (Josh) Huff, Hokes Bluff; grandchildren, Drew Smith, Wellington, Taylor (Autumn) Smith, Hokes Bluff, Braxton Logan Smith, Wellington and Logan Sexton, Gadsden; sister-in-law, Amy (Ricky) Smallridge, Auburn; niece, Abby Smallridge, Auburn; special cousins, Marcie (Ron) Womack and Melinda (David) White, Hokes Bluff and chosen family Greg and Letitia Watkins, Hokes Bluff.
A visitation for Anita will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Collier-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, 824 Rainbow Drive, Gadsden, Alabama 35901, followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM. Brother Eddie Gooch will officiate along with Rev. Darrell Huff and Dr. Fred Malone. Mrs. Chavers will be laid to rest at Crestwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Bearden, Terry Snow, Troy Wagnon, Greg Watkins, Jim Wood and Craig Jordan. Honorary Pallbearers will include; David White, and Ron Womack.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Anita's honor to Way of the Cross Ministries, 101 N. 24th St. Gadsden, AL 35904.
