Mike Wegener

Mike was born to Margret (Ketchum) and Fredrich William Wegener Sr. on October 8th, 1946. He was a Colorado Native, born and raised in Denver. Mike attended Englewood High School, where he was a star athlete who excelled in basketball and baseball. He had a “golden arm” in baseball and was considered one of the top basketball players in the country. Following high school, he attended the University of Colorado at Denver.

Near the end of his senior year of college in 1964, Mike signed on to play for the Baltimore Orioles. He later played for the Philadelphia Phillies and then the Montreal Expos when they joined the National League in 1969. In spite of having had problems with his arm, Mike played professional baseball for 15 years, including two major-league seasons with the Expos. He pitched a shutout game against the San Francisco Giants in 1969 and gave up Willie Mays’ 3,000th base hit in 1970. He retired from baseball and returned home to Denver in 1978.

In 1985, Mike married Marcia Bajec. He loved Marcia dearly. He went back to school and became a nuclear energy quality engineer. He worked for several years at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant. Later, Mike and Marcia relocated to Ohio to be closer to Marcia’s family.

Mike was diagnosed with stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1991. He fought a tough battle for 32 years, going through remission and recurrence several times. When Marcia died in 2018, Mike returned to Colorado and resided in Fort Collins until the time of his own passing.

Though Mike experienced many challenges in his life, he always remained positive. He was a good man with a good heart. He will be missed.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife Marcia, and by his parents. He is survived by two brothers, Fred Jr. (Penny) and Ray (Diane), and his dear friend, Janet, as well as several nieces and nephews.
