Bobbie G. Young

Bobbie Young was born in her grandparents' home on March 9, 1932 in Many, Louisiana to Richard Eli Grantham and Myrtis Dorothy (Marr) Grantham. She was the oldest of four with two younger brothers and one younger sister. Bobbie grew up surrounded by a large extended family. She learned many life skills from her grandparents including sewing, quilting, gardening, and canning. Her parents taught her to make do with what she had. It was great advice that served Bobbie well throughout her life.

Bobbie was a good student and became the first in her family to complete high school and college. She began college as a nursing major because it was one of the only programs with a full scholarship option at Louisiana College. Due to the illness and death of her father, she was unable to continue and lost her scholarship. A local philanthropist heard her story and offered to pay the rest of her tuition. With the opportunity now available, Bobbie pursued a degree in Education - her true passion.

Louisiana College was where she met her husband, Charles Young. On August 22, 1953 they were married in Pineville, Louisiana. Charles was studying to be a minister and their adventures in ministry were about to begin. By 1954 Bobbie had her first daughter, Elizabeth Hope, a seminary baby. In 1961 their second daughter, Shannah Cloe, was born during an unprecedented ice storm in south Mississippi.

Bobbie supported Charles in his work at many churches, on various mission fields, as a church planter, and as a Director of Missions. Bobbie taught in local elementary schools while also serving as the nursery/preschool coordinator and Sunday School teacher at every church they were a part of. She had a gift of sharing the love of Jesus with children in the simplest of ways – through the wonders of nature, through Bible stories and verses, and, her favorite, music. She taught Jesus Loves Me to more children than we could ever count. She had a beautiful heart for young children and was gifted in helping those who struggled academically and socially. Together with Charles, her husband, she taught English to second language learners as part of their ministry. They served in Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky and Colorado.

Bobbie had several hobbies. Her favorite was flower gardening which she continued until she was 91. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, cross-stitching, paper cutting, and reading.

Bobbie delighted in her five grandchildren. She always had a stock of sugar-filled goodies waiting for them and believed that Little Debbie’s and a Coke could cure anything! Summer visits were full of playing in the backyard creek, picking the garden, blowing bubbles, and bathing in the metal tub in the backyard. She braved travel to San Antonio and Las Vegas with her oldest two grandchildren and stepped out of her comfort zone camping in South Dakota and Yellowstone Park with her younger three.

Before passing, Bobbie was blessed to meet and know FIVE great-grandbabies! Although playing was difficult, she connected with them through reading. Her to them, them to her. She delighted in watching and listening to them, commenting often on their unique characteristics and dubbing them all geniuses. Her legacy will live on in each of them, and any more the family is blessed with.

Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Myrtis Grantham; her siblings, Larry Grantham and Daisy Grantham; her husband, Charles Young; her daughter, Melanie Young; and her grandson, Matthew Scott.

She is survived by her brother Milton Grantham; daughters Hope Proksch (Walter, favorite son-in-law) and Shannah Scott (Bill, favorite son-in-law); her grandchildren, Stewart Farnum (Amber), Alyson Spugnardi (Chad), Tre’ Scott (Brianna), and McKenna Fegan (Matt); and those that brought her the most joy, THE GREAT GRANDS, Daphne & Luca Spugnardi, and Hyson, Raelyn & Wesley Scott.

Bobbie, you are loved and will be missed.

Per her wishes, a Graveside Service will be held with close family and friends on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 10am and Bobbie will be laid to rest with her late husband, Charles, at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Fort Collins.
