Bert was born on October 23, 1929 to Bert "Casey" and Cleffie (Montgomery) Jones in Tularosa, NM. After Bert graduated from Deming High School in 1948, he enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he went on to study Business Administration at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales, NM. He graduated Summa Cum Laude honors in 1957. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Economics from University of Arizona in 1958.
It was while attending Eastern that he met the love of his life, Jeanene, through a mutual friend in Ruidoso, NM. They were married in Santa Rosa, NM on January 21, 1956 and enjoyed 68 years together.
Bert grew up in a home of both parents and four siblings. He was the last remaining member of this family. The Depression years were very difficult. For four years, the family migrated to pick cotton from mid-August til late December. As a five-year-old just starting school, this was a devastating experience. Through education and hard work, he rose above these experiences. He was a teacher, a high school principal, and Director of Human Resources for the Albuquerque Public Schools. He took pride in solving personnel problems and hiring the best teachers.
Bert is survived by his loving wife, Jeanene, children Le’Ann Lassiter (Mike), Bert Jones III also called Rick (B.J.), and Nancy McAlister (Jeff), ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews and a special surviving sister-in-law, Gail Jones (Dean).
Bert was a devoted Christian, and through the years, he was a member of churches in Fort Collins, CO and Albuquerque, NM.
A Memorial Service will be held in late December and Bert will be placed to rest at Santa Fe National Cemetery in his home state of New Mexico. Treasured memories of Bert and words of condolence for his family are welcome at www.resthavencolorado.com.
