William "Bill" Powers, age 72, of Fresno, died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Bill was born in Pecos, Texas on December 26, 1937. After serving in the US Air Force he moved to Fresno, where he met and married Jovita, his wife of 47 years
He was active in his community and his parish through Knights of Columbus, Council #4440. Bill joined them in 1963, where he had the opportunity of serving as a Grand Knight. He also served as both treasurer and financial secretary for many years and was a member of the 4th Degree. His involvement in the community also extended to the Sons In Retirement (SIR) organization, Branch #159, where he was an active member.
He began his teaching career in 1975, where he taught multiple subjects at Edison High School and also coached soccer, golf, and football. His passion for teaching continued with his kids where he coached them in softball, baseball, soccer, and football throughout all stages of their lives.
Bill is survived by his wife Jovita; his daughter, Stephanie and her husband Radford, and their daughters, Aunica, Kiana, and Keilana; his daughter, Valerie and her husband Chris; his son William "Will" and, his wife Jennifer, and their son William. Bill is also survived by three brothers; three sisters; and many other special family members.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Monday, August 16, 2010, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
In the spirit of Bill's selfless service to others and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the St. Anthony of Padua Church Building Fund; Y.L.I., or Young Women's Institute.
