He served in the USAF from 1948 to 1960 and the Active Reserves from 1960 to 1988 with The Pennsylvania Air National Guard 112th FIW and the California Air National Guard 144FIW until retirement as Chief Master Sergeant in 1988. During his years of service he was honored with several accommodations including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany Berlin Airlift Device) and the Medal for Humane Action. He was proud to be an active member of the Pennsylvania ANG 112 FIW, the winner of the U.S. Air Force Intcp. Weapons Meet F-102 Category in 1963 and in 1980 winner of the William Tell Weapons Competition with the California ANG 144 FIW.
He was a member of the American Legion, Clovis, CA. The 602nd AC&W Sqdn reunion Association the 144FIW Alumni and the Veterans of Underage Military service (VUMS).
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Johnny.
Survived by his wife of 56 years, Alberta A. (Zablocki) Segal; children, Stephen and wife Susan of Chula Vista, Ca., Stephanie of Fresno, Ca., Walter and wife Rita of Fresno, Ca., Wesley and wife Denise of Fresno, Ca.; grandchildren, Brett, Scarlett, Desiree, Wesley, Matthew (Walter), Alyssa, Nicole, Amanda, Zachary, Hannah and Paige; his brother, Andrew and wife Fran of Erie, Pa. and sister-in-law, Lucille of Erie, Pa; along with many loving and caring nieces, nephews, friends, family and neighbors.
Visitation will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Guadalupe Chapel on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 6:00 to 7:00 .m. followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
