Joseph Dale Dunbar passed away on August 26, 2022 from pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 18, 1947 to Jack and Phyllis (Coyle) Dunbar in Pittsburg, California. He grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek in 1965. He attended Fresno State and graduated with a BA Degree in German and Math with a Secondary Teaching Credential. He taught for 36 years and coached Cross Country and Track in Fresno Unified School District.
Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years Sharlene, his daughter Lindsay Furlong and her husband Jake, his daughter Erin Dunbar Moore and her wife Tiffani. He will missed by his precious grandchildren Nathan and Dagny Furlong, Saylor and twins Tobin and Teagan Moore. He is also survived by his brother Denny and his wife Patty, his brother Darrell and his wife Sally, his brother-in-law Gary Guadagno and his sister-in-law Francine Mercado and her husband Bill and nieces and a nephew.
He will be remembered as a family man, a disciplined athlete, with a kind heart, a gentle spirit with a sense of humor. He enjoyed running long distances, cycling, working out, cooking, reading, gardening and traveling.
Joe’s family is grateful for the love, support and random acts of kindness bestowed upon us the last few months by family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Rod Kraft, Jennifer Gault, PA, Dr. Ravi Rao, cCare’s chemo infusion Staff, St. Agnes Supportive Staff, Dr. Jon Gerry, Dr. Ian Holmes, the Staff at Portland Providence Hospital and the nurses and home care workers at Compassionate Care Hospice for their exceptional care.
Internment will be at the Clovis Cemetery. Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to Fresno State Bulldog Foundation, specifically for Cross Country or Track and Field, the American Cancer Society, the Central California Food Bank, the Poverello House or the donor’s favorite charity.
