Hiroshi Isogawa passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015. He was born to Joichi and Kiyoko Isogawa on November 23, 1925 near Pinedale, CA. He was the fourth of nine children. He attended Pinedale Elementary prior to moving to the Figarden area of Fresno. He attended Central Union High School until his family was interned in Jerome, AR in 1942. He joined the US Army after graduating from Denson High. After serving in the States and Europe during World War II, he returned to the family farm in Fresno. Hiro was a founding member and later Post Commander of VFW Sierra Nisei Post 8499. As a member of the 442nd RCT, he was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and proudly attended the ceremonies in Washington D.C.
Harumi “Harriet” Isogawa passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. She was born to Yasujiro and Kuma Watanabe on January 20, 1929 in Keahua, Maui, Hawaii. She was the youngest of six children. She graduated from Maui High and cosmetology school in Honolulu. She was a live-in-housekeeper for a couple who also owned a home in Fresno, so she and a girlfriend decided to come to California to find work. Harriet attended “beauty college” in Fresno to obtain her California license and met Hiro through her classmate and friend (Hiro’s sister Mieko). Hiro and Harriet were married on June 30, 1952 in Reno, NV.
Hiro worked in farming and then in the grocery industry for many years. Harriet was a homemaker. After Hiro retired in 1995 he started volunteering at the Legion of Valor Museum where he loved to help with exhibits and show visitors around. Hiro enjoyed fishing with family and friends for many years until Harriet’s health declined.
Hiro and Harriet are survived by their son Randy and their daughter Leilani and her husband Larry Koop, all of Fresno, as well as many nieces and nephews. Hiro is also survived by his brothers Frank and Tom Isogawa of Selma.
The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Care Center for their care of Harriet.
A viewing will be held at Lisle Funeral Home on Sunday, December 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the United Japanese Christian Church in Clovis on Monday, December 21 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Fresno.
