Elwood served four years in the army during World War II. He married Vera Durman of Coal Valley, Illinois in 1945 and they were blessed with a son and a daughter.
He was a barber, and he owned the Johnson & Beam Barber Shop in Moline, Illinois. Elwood was also a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Moline where he loved serving his Savior. He was the Sunday School Superintendent for over 10 years.
In 1959 Elwood and his family moved to Fresno, California. He was a barber instructor at Moler Barber College for 25 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fresno and loved leading the children’s worship services, Bible studies and prayer meetings. He loved to worship his Lord, being with his family and helping others. After his wife Vera passed, he later married Barbara Fickle.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vera, his parents Oscar and Edna Johnson and many more precious relatives.
He is survived by his son, Neal Johnson and his wife Jan of Redding, CA, daughter Eleanor Saltzman and her husband Mark of Visalia, CA, grandchildren: Kristi, Kevin, Kurt, Ryan, Craig and Camryn, 15 great grandchildren,his two sisters Alice Circello of Rock Island, IL and Edna Mae Lawson of Yucca Valley, CA; 1 niece, 4 nephews and 3 cousins and his wife Barbara of Fresno, CA and her family.
A Memorial Service will be 10 A.M. on Friday, February 25, 2011 at Grace Community Church, 424 N. Lovers Lane, Visalia, CA.
Memorials may be given to the children’s ministries at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fresno, CA. or the Fresno Rescue Mission.
