Barbara L. Horn passed away on November 21, 2021, at the age of 81. Barbara was born on September 2, 1940, in Fresno to Lawrence and Bessie Jones. She graduated from Fresno High School in 1958 and married John, the boy who lived two doors down from her childhood home.
John and Barbara loved to travel; they went to Europe and made frequent trips to Pismo Beach, where they often entertained their grandchildren. Barbara also enjoyed knitting, playing a variety of card games with her friends and family, and was thrilled that she once had an opportunity to meet President George H.W. Bush.
In her professional career, Barbara’s favorite role was as the assistant to the graduate school dean at Fresno Pacific University. She volunteered extensively with her church and sang in the choir. Later, John and Barbara moved to Visalia where she worked as a clerical assistant to the principal at Pinkham Elementary School.
John and Barbara had three children: Richard, Sharon, and Lisa. Together they enjoyed chaperoning high school band trips for their children and camping at Limekiln State Park. They had many animals at their Clovis home on Behymer Avenue. Barbara also helped with her children’s cub scout and girl scout activities.
Barbara was an incredibly loving grandmother to Shannon, Whitney, Carissa, Jennifer, and Daniel.
She frequently babysat her grandchildren which included taking them to the movies, the bookstore, and various extracurricular activities. She encouraged and empowered her grandchildren to pursue their dreams and was so proud of the people that they grew up to be. Additionally, she welcomed their spouses with open arms and was elated to meet her great-grandchildren.
Barbara’s granddaughters also learned about her love of reading, the art of fingernail painting, and that she was always available as a shoulder to cry on.
However, most importantly she shared her unconditional love and the unconditional love of Jesus with her grandchildren. One of Barbara’s favorite verses was Romans 10:9, “If you declare with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
John and Barbara were married sixty-three years. Barbara is survived by her husband, her sister (Nancy), three children (Richard, Sharon, and Lisa), five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. A public memorial service will be held on Friday, December 3rd at 1:00 pm at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel in Fresno (please note that masks are required for all unvaccinated guests). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Barbara’s name to either RiverCross Church in Visalia or your favorite charity.
