John J. Gabel a lifetime resident of Fremont passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the age of 89. He was born March 19, 1927 the son of Ben and Lucille (Reinbolt) Gabel. John was a graduate of St. Joseph High and promptly joined the United States Navy upon graduation. Upon his return from the service he worked at the family store and bar and later became a meat inspector for the State of Ohio. He married Joyce I. Baskey on July 4, 1952 at St. Ann Church; she preceded him in death on March 28, 2007.
As a young boy John was a bat boy for the Fremont Green Sox at Anderson Field. He loved to sing and was in the chancellor’s choir as a youth. John was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., Elks, Moose and Sycamore Hills Golf Course.
John loved working in his yard, golfing, playing cards and entertaining family and friends at his residence and Lake Home. He enjoyed cheering on Notre Dame, Ohio State and road trips with his friend “Turtle” (Wayne Graham) .Together they would pick up motor coaches in Elkhart, IN and drive them for delivery to Canada, providing the perfect opportunity for a halibut fishing trip before they returned.
Surviving is his son Joseph (Joy) Gabel, granddaughter Jennifer (Keith) Miller and great-grandson Kyle Miller, sisters Norma (Jim) Hoffman, Alice (Vic) Frederick, Karen Gabel, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Clayton, nephew Peter Gabel and niece Martha Frederick.
The family would like to thank the staff of Elmwood at the Springs, Caroline Gates and Dr. Garlapati for taking good care of John.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 27, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8P.M. with vigil services beginning at 7:30P.M. at Keller-Koch-Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, OH. A Mass of Resurrection will begin at 10:30A.M. on Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church 1011 W. State Street, Fremont, with Rev. Michael Zacharias officiating.
