I played basketball with Jake on a regular basis until things shut down two years ago. We had tried to get a game going a number of times in the last 6 months, but it never came together and I can't believe he's gone. He was a great guy and a great sport. He had this hesitation low finger roll scoop layup that I still can't figure out how he made it work. It won't be the dream team without you.

Friend

I worked with Jake at ETM for a many years. We played basketball daily out back of the ETM building, talked about electronics, and sometimes our bosses. We played golf at Sunken Gardens on Fridays and drank long island ice teas on the tenth hole. I enjoyed talking shop with Jake because he always had a completely different perspective from other engineers about electronics and life. He was always trying to bridge the gap between friend groups to bring everyone together. Sometimes I would refer to him as Gandhi because of his appearance and tolerance of others.
After he switched jobs and went to dB Control I did not see him as much, but we stayed in contact by playing golf. He never complained about sleeping on my couch in El Dorado Hills and then waking up very early to return to the bay area. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him recently in Washington DC at the AOC conference, and like always, he was running full speed and bigger than life itself. I will miss his friendship, humor, and wisdom. Godspeed Jake with your new journey.


In Memory of my friend Jacob Thampan by Mike Lee

I met Jacob Thampan 5 ½ years ago when I interviewed with dB Control.  He was very quiet and did not say or ask much so I thought he didn’t like me.  I was so wrong as we became very close friends and Jacob, Steve Walley and I became an incredible travel team to visit customers to share the dB Control capabilities, technical and leading edge advantages in the high power amplifier as well as high and low voltage power supplies and he created great performance momentum for dB Control.

Jacob always introduced himself as engineering  vs his title of VP of Engineering and was always humble even-though he had knowledge off the top of his head on all the products from the beginning of the history of dB Control since his mentor and founder Joe Hajduk hired him in the early 1990’s.  Jacob was kind, friendly, knowledgeable and was so well liked by our customers and the family at dB Control.  His can do attitude and his ability to challenge his engineering team is the legacy he leaves behind in our minds, memories and also our hearts.

With his recent passing, we feel a void not only to our dB Control family but being felt by our valued customers.  His smile and happy memories will always be indelibly ingrained in the fabric of our minds and hearts.  We will all forever see and feel Jacob when we look at the products and walls at dB Control.  We will miss you but will never forget you Jacob!

I wanted to provide a little background on my beloved brother. Jake is the the son of Dr. K.V. Thampan and Susheela Thampan. He was born in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. He came to the United States when he was four years old. He attended Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Portland State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Jake was Vice President of Engineering at DB Control in Fremont, California. He was a key player to the defense industry company since the early 1990s and a beloved member of the DB Control family. He was an avid golfer, basketball player and snow boarder and all around athlete. Jake loved cooking, good food and beverages. He was a devoted family man. Jake is survived by his wife Tammy Vuong, and three children Matthew, Joshua, Chloe, his mother Susheela and sister Jennifer. Jake was a cherished friend to many and will be greatly missed by all. Jake was an incredible man and mentor to so many. 
I first met Jake as a customer of mine and we soon became friends.  I consider myself so fortunate to have been able to spend time outside of business getting to know Jake personally over the years.  He will be dearly missed. 

My deepest condolences to his family. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. 

I am so sad to hear Jacob isn't with us anymore.  I worked with Jacob at ETM, where his amazing wit will be a lasting memory.  Not only his sense of humor - but Jacob was wickedly smart and an asset on any team.  I have attached a photo from 35 years ago when we probably were shipping a machine or something.   My Best.

I met Jake in 1985 when we worked together at ETM in Palo Alto.

I have cherished memories of and with Jake as a roommate, fellow golfer in our early stages, Friday night Risk tournaments, watching football and playing softball, river rafting, sharing good times but, most importantly being a friend.  Jake was and is a irrepressible spirit and full of life.

My sympathies go out to his family.
