She was born on March 9, 1949, in Puerto Rico. She was the daughter of the late Carmelo and Francisca (Chevere) Rios and sister of the late Carmen Sepulveda (Pete). She was a registered nurse for over 50 years, starting her career at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she met her beloved husband, Jose Ortega, who proceeded her in death two months prior.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Ortega (Amy) and David Ortega (Michelle); three daughters, Wanda Sherman (Brian), Kathy Bailey (Eric), and Iris Ortega; step daughter, Annettee Ortega Parker; one brother, Stephan Rios, and two sisters, Wanda Rivera & Zoraida Santiago; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was dearly loved by many: her husband, children, parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends & neighbors, and would do anything for any of them if asked. She was an exceptional & dedicated ER nurse who retired from The Culpeper Assisted Living & Rehab Center in Culpeper, VA, in 2022. She was a proud American, compassionate caregiver who led her life with humility & guided by her Catholic faith. She took joy in her work, gardening, and doing for others. But what she loved most was sharing highs and lows around the dinner table with her grandchildren and cheering for them at their sporting and schooling events.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 8:30-9:00 a.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m., with Rev. Amos Healy officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, VA.
