David grew up in Franklin, OH. He was very involved in Boy Scouts Troop 14 and was given the Outstanding Scout award. A proud Wildcat, David graduated from Franklin High School in 1961. He was employed in the paper making industry until his retirement from Appleton Papers in 2005. David was a member of the Franklin First Baptist Church since 1965, where he served on the board of trustees and as Sunday School superintendent. He was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, UK Basketball, Dale Earnhardt, and breakfast at Bob Evans and Cracker Barrel. Most importantly, David was a proud family man and enjoyed spending time with his loved ones. He was a very involved dad, spending countless hours as a Den Leader for his son's Boy Scouts troop, driving his daughters to dance and baton classes, and sitting in the stands while they participated in school sports and activities. He always supported his grandchildren, near and far. You could always spot him in the crowd at games, concerts, recitals, and graduations with a smile on his face. He loved having a house full of family on the holidays - his favorite moments were seeing the kids' Halloween costumes and passing out presents on Christmas.
In 2007, David received the gift of life in the form of a kidney transplant from an anonymous donor, which helped extend his life for 17 years. Because of this, he registered to be an organ donor himself and when he passed, David was able to pay it forward as he donated his corneas to help give someone the gift of sight.
David was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Beulah (Martin) and Irvin Rook; father and stepmother, Carl and Rosella Hayes; and brother Gilbert C. Hayes.
