She was born in Detroit, Michigan to Lester R and Olive A (Altman) Figley. Her childhood years were spent in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, until the family moved to rural New Baltimore during the Great Depression. She attended Wayne University in Detroit, majoring in Home Economics, until she met and married her “knight in shining armor”, the handsome, world savvy USAAF Captain, Clayton F Allen, on January 26, 1946. June subsequently had four children in nine years, while zigzagging across the country, moving her family eight times in thirteen years, following her husband’s USAF career transfers. Finally arriving in Sudbury in 1960, she immediately fell in love with her new “home” town and its residents.
June and Clay were inseparable fixtures in their community for more than half a century, participating in “too many to count” town programs, activities, projects, departments, committees, and many other local and regional organizations. She and Clay were honored with Citizens of the Year and Volunteers of the Year awards for their devotion and dedication to the Town. Always ready, willing, and able to help, they were friends to all – in good times and in bad. A few of June’s personal passions were her love of flowers, children, and animals. She delighted in her own plantings and those around town, as in the traffic island barrels. After her own children had left the nest, she provided child care for several young families in town. She found great joy in feeding the beautiful birds, including flocks of turkeys, and many other critters who claimed her backyard as their own. And she adored the companionship of the many kitties that lived with her over the years, in addition to her sweet adopted dog, Buttons.
June was predeceased by her best friend and precious husband, Clayton F Allen on October 20, 2012, and by her beloved family: parents Lester R and Olive A (Altman) Figley, sister Phyllis C (Figley) Mroz, and half brother John G Gibson.
June is survived by her four loving and grateful children: Nancy J Holland (William), Judith A Roberts (Jeffrey), Charles L Allen, and David R Allen (Catherine); as well as four grandchildren: Nathan G Holland (Pannarai), Jessica A (Holland) Hathaway (Kevin), William R Allen, and Deirdre E (Allen) Wilson (Joe); and three great grandchildren: Grady R Hathaway, Lilla E Hathaway, and Dimitrios S Neroutsos.
Flowers and donations are not necessary. June would just want everyone to do something they love that will also benefit others, whether two-legged or four.
A simple and brief memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 2:00pm at the family plot in New Town Cemetery, 357 Concord Road, Sudbury MA, rain or shine.
