Maria C. Olemeda, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, family member, and friend of Fountain, Colorado is at rest after passing away from breast cancer on January 7th, 2024, at the age of 87.
Maria, or Corky as she was known by family and friends, was born on June 7th, 1936, in Ault, Colorado to Juana E. and Jose C. Romero. She graduated Ault High School (Highland High School) in 1954 and married David Olemeda in December of the same year. She and Dave moved to Fountain in 1970 and raised six children, Theresa, Roxanne, David, Diana, Daniel, and Kim there.
Upon retiring in 1995, Maria and Dave enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada, Los Angeles, California, Deadwood, South Dakota, and various gambling towns in Colorado. Maria loved family gatherings, cooking for her family, and visiting with her neighbors. She also enjoyed attending church and volunteered for several years at Holy Family Church (St. Dominic's) performing the folding and ironing of Liturgical Linens.
Maria had a passion for sewing, gardening, and reading. She loved to discuss topics that she had read about with her family and friends and was a lifelong learner. She liked watching the Sci-Fi channel and appreciated anything space related.
Maria is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, David Olemeda. Also, her mother Juana E. Romero, and father Jose C. Romero. As well as her brothers, Estevan Romero, Manuel Romero, Arthur Romero, daughter Diana Moya, granddaughter Jessica Andrews, grandson Jeremy (J.D.) Kelsey, sons-in-law Modesto Gonzalez, Anthony Stamper, and daughter in law Susan Olemeda.
She is survived by her daughter Theresa Gonzalez (James), daughter Roxanne Olemeda, son David Olemeda, son Daniel Olemeda and daughter Kim (Cedrick) Shatteen.
In total, Maria had 13 grandchildren, David (Ben), Tara, Jeremy (J.D), Justin (Scott), Jacob (Jake), Jessica, Michael (Mike), Zachary (Zac), Joseph (Joe), Megan, Jenna, Alena and Cedrick II (Al), as well as numerous great grandchildren including Dalton, Daniel, Quintin, and Amiaha.
She also leaves behind her last surviving siblings, Elma Martinez of Arvada, Colorado and her youngest brother, Gilbert (Margaret) Romero of Eaton, Colorado. Along with her immediate family, many other of her family members, nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends will cherish Maria's memory.
The family would like to thank the compassionate care of nurses and staff of Compassus Hospice of Colorado Springs who came multiple times per week and made Maria's last days comfortable. Thank you to the family, neighbors, and friends that have called, texted, and stopped by and prayed for Maria in her last days. Finally, thank you to Phil Vigil of St. Dominic's Church of Security, Colorado. You came weekly to deliver in-home communion, and she enjoyed the time that she got to spend with you.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on January 20, 2024, at Dove Witt Family Mortuary located at 6630 S. US Highway 85-87, Fountain, Colorado 80817, (719)-390-4906. Lunch will be provided at the Mortuary following the funeral service.
