He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on December 16, 1944.
Will graduated from Trimble Technical High School, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Technology from Tarleton State University. Will also held multiple Associate Degrees from Weatherford College.
He was married to Linda Martin on April 4, 1969 in Fort Worth, Texas. Their marriage lasted more than 50 years until his death. Will worked as an electronics sales representative for many years, serving customers throughout north central Texas, and was recognized for his success and relationships throughout his career.
When computer technology overtook the sales representation field, Will returned to school to prepare himself to excel in the new electronic communication environment. He attended Weatherford College where he earned multiple Associate Degrees in Computer technology, computer science, and various other areas of electronic communication, before entering Tarleton State University to pursue his Bachelor’s Degree. Soon after receiving that degree, Will returned to Weatherford College where it all began and launched his second career as a Computer Data Base Manager. He was valued there for his computer knowledge and skill, but also for his unique talents as an amateur chef and a barbeque “Grill King.” Professionally, Will was a member of Delta Phi Fraternity, American Legion, and the Teacher’s Retirement Association.
Will was heavily involved in his community through his leadership and volunteerism in the Boy Scouts of America. Initially serving as the founding leader of Webelos Den 148, he continued to serve as the founding Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 148 and eventually founded a high adventure senior Scouting Post 148, all sponsored by the First United Methodist Church in Granbury, Texas. In addition to his own three sons who grew up in scouting, Will helped to mentor and develop the lives of hundreds of young men, many of whom earned scouting’s highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout through his leadership, mentorship, and patience. Will’s influence was felt beyond his own den, troop, and post, due to his involvement as a leader at Boy Scout Roundtable where he was able to teach and mentor new scout leaders as they began their adult roles in scouting. The relationships Will formed with all those he encountered in his life journey created memories that lasted a lifetime, as a multitude of those he mentored, returned as adults to tell him what a tremendous influence he was on their lives.
Though Will followed the teachings of Jesus throughout his life, his relationship with his God and Savior grew in later years to a deep devotion that defined him and shaped his relationships with all who knew him. He communed with the Lord daily, reading God’s Word, and praying with his wife and family. His abiding faith in his Savior was evident in his passing as it was in his life. There was a peace about Will that was apparent even in the moments of his death. It was as if he simply stepped right out of this life, directly into the next one, at peace and ready to continue his journey.
Will was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Poe Martin; his mother, Lula Mae Davis Martin; his brother, Walter Joe Martin; and his youngest sister, Martha Ruth Martin Sides.
Will was a very proud Vietnam War Veteran, and upon his return home, he married the love of his life, Linda. Together, they raised 3 sons: Ricky, Robin, and Randy; and eventually expanded their family to include: Randy’s wife Lindsey, Robin’s wife Andrea, and Will’s only grandson, Tryston. Will is also survived by his sister Mary Jane Martin Lindsey and her husband Jimmy; Martha Ruth’s husband Danny, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Will is also survived by his beloved sister-in-law Gayle Denham Currie and her husband as well as Will’s best friend throughout his life, Pat Currie.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Laurel Land Memorial Park on Crowley Road. There will be a brief indoor visitation immediately prior to the service from 9:00-9:45 AM.
