Steve was a proud Vietnam Veteran who loved and served his country well. While he would be considered a jack-of-all-trades, he was particularly skilled as a mechanic and electrician. Steve was considered the family car repairman and took time to pass that skill onto his two sons. He would go above and beyond to help anyone that needed anything. In a time before Google, Steve would work and figure something out that needed to be fixed until it was completed.
Steve also came from a musically inclined family which fostered a love of singing. He would reword popular songs to include his children’s names in them just to make them special. Anytime he would be driving the family somewhere, there would be singing. It was a love that stayed with him until the end.
Steve also loved animals, but his two recent dogs, Nala and Logan, were by his side constantly for years. He spoiled them like he did his own children and grandchildren.
Steve also loved Christmas as an adult because he grew up not having much. One year he was given the Christmas tree at school, and he dragged it home until the back of the tree was gone just so his family could have a tree that Christmas.
Above all, Steve was a devoted Christ follower. He loved reading the Bible and learning new things and would often discuss what he learned or ask for your thoughts on a passage. Steve made sure that love for Christ was passed down to his children. He had prayer clothes made for each of his children and grandchildren one year for Christmas because he wanted to pass down the importance of staying in constant communication with God. He took promises to heart and would not break them once he made them. His hugs were healing and conveyed the love that he had for those around him.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Marie Perkins, and his baby sister, Pat West. Steve is survived by his wife Fleta Perkins of 44 years of Fort Worth; Daughter Laura LaRiviere and her husband Brent LaRiviere, kids Regan and Luke of Benbrook; Daughter Katrina Jones and her husband Richard Jones, kids Colt, Kaylie, and Kelsie of Grand Prairie; Son Shawn Perkins and his wife Darby Perkins, kids Lauren, Spencer, Jason, and Kate of Benbrook; Daughter Amber Perkins and her son Braxton of Fort Worth; Son Chris Perkins and his wife Laura Perkins, kids Trevor and Levi of Benbrook. His brother-in-law, Pete West, and nephews David and Eric West, their wives and children, as well as a multitude of extended family and friends.
Steve was also expecting his first great-grandson in February, Waylon James Mitchell, whom he was very excited to meet.
