On Sunday, November 13, Stanley C. Powell, age 90, passed away. He was born in Niles, Michigan on October 14, 1932, to George and Alice Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Ed, and sister, Beverly. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his daughters Alice Lawrence (Kevin), and Sally Powell Schall (Chris), along with his grandchildren, Jordan Lawrence (Meghan), and Kaylee Herrick (Ryan), and one great-granddaughter, Emily Herrick. He also has two step-grandchildren, Jeff and Kelley Schall.
When Stan was 14 years old his family moved to Lexington, KY. His mom, Alice, passed when he was a young boy and he was raised by his stepmother, Winifred, who encouraged his education and helped him gain a love of reading.
Stan graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington and enlisted in the Air Force, which he joined the very next day after his high school graduation. He served four years, including a communications squadron role in the Aleutian Islands, then took his G.I. Bill and returned to Lexington. Stan noticed an attractive young woman who lived across the street – that young woman was Carolyn. The couple married in 1955 and would have celebrated their 67th anniversary on December 17th.
Stan earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1958 from the University of Kentucky. He was the first person in his family to earn a degree. After graduation, Stan and Carolyn moved to Fort Worth where he pursued his passion for aircraft with a position at Convair, which later became General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin. As the company grew so did his career, and he enjoyed a 37-year multi-faceted professional life in engineering, manufacturing, contracts, and administration. His work duties took him across the U.S. and to Australia, England, Norway, Egypt, and Israel.
Apart from work, Stan enjoyed spending time with his family, along with playing golf, duplicate bridge, gardening, and traveling. He also was a talented chef, always ready to smoke brisket and ribs. Stan had a sly sense of humor and he enjoyed sharing a glass of wine or cold beer while he and Carolyn entertained countless neighbors and friends on their back patio.
Visitation is on Thursday, November 17, from 4 pm – 6 pm at Laurel Land, 7100 Crowley Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76134. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 18 at 1 pm. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Stan’s name to the Tarrant Area Food Bank (https://tafb.org/), so more families can have access to healthy food.
