Robert Lee Evans, Jr.'s life journey was marked by love, service, and a deep passion for music. Born on January 5, 1941, in Palestine, Texas, to Robert Lee Evans, Sr. and Justine Whaley Evans, he later moved with his family to Fort Worth, where he attended and graduated from Como High School. His time at Como High was not only about academics but also about sports, as he proudly played on the varsity basketball team.
After graduating in 1959, Robert continued his education at North Texas State University, currently known as the University of North Texas. However, the call to serve his country during the conflict in Vietnam led him to enlist in the United States Navy, where he served diligently until 1964.
Growing up in Palestine, Robert acquired the nickname “Tom” (his older brother Edd was nicknamed “Jack”), which was given by his father, and then the nickname “Bird” was given by friends within the Como High School community. After joining the New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, he was referred to as “Bob.”
In 1965, Robert embarked on a lifelong journey of love when he married Barbara Williams. Their union endured fifty-eight years and was blessed with four sons.
Throughout his life, Robert's love for music, especially jazz, was a defining passion. As a member of the band, he played the trumpet which brought him immense joy. His passion for music extended beyond performance, leading him to a vast collection of records, tapes, and CDs, each representing his deep appreciation for the art form.
Professionally, Robert dedicated thirty years of his life to AT&T, where he served as a Communications Technician. His commitment to his work was not only evident in his daily tasks but also in his membership in the AT&T Pioneers Network, showcasing his dedication to both his profession and his community.
At the age of eighty-three, Robert Lee “Bird” Evans, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Evans, Sr., and Justine Whaley Clardy, as well as his brother, Edd Evans, and his son, Michael Evans, Sr. Though he departed this world, he left behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his three sons, Cedric, Kermit (Dr. Tabatha Evans), and Robert, III (Takiyah Evans); his daughter-in-law, Debra Evans; his sister, Mary Louise Evans; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends as well as in the hearts of those who knew him.
In the tapestry of his life, Robert Lee Evans, Jr. wove threads of dedication, love, and passion, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate through generations.
