A Texan through and through, Nancy Ellen Soteriou was born in McAllen, Texas, and lived with her family there, in Temple, Texas and in El Paso where she lived for many years. She moved to Austin and ultimately Fort Worth where she lived at the time of her passing.
Nancy met the love of her life John (Jake) Soteriou in El Paso while working for the U.S. Department of Defense at Fort Bliss, Texas. She and Jake were married for 54 years. Nancy was a passionate and committed public servant and spent her entire professional career helping people learn more, have more, and make more of their lives. She worked at the El Paso community College helping students navigate the challenges of higher education. While there she also pursued her own educational dreams earning advanced degrees and a PhD in Management. Nancy acted on her believes in Public Education serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ysleta ISD in El Paso. Subsequently, she worked for both the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Department of Transportation in Austin, Texas. In her entire career she was always focused on assisting others rather than herself.
Throughout her adult life Nancy was involved in numerous Volunteer activities including advancing the participation of women in government, serving as an elections observer for the Texas Secretary of State, serving on the Citizens Community Development Advisory Committee for the City of Fort Worth, as well as the Riverbend Homeowners Association. She received awards and recognitions too numerous to list for both professional and community service.
Nancy believed in the enrichment of travel (even when getting lost or left behind), enjoyed her Keno nights and Bunko “Babes”, and always made room at her table for friends.
Nancy Ellen is preceded in death by her parents Nancy and Joe Ferguson.
Nancy is survived by her husband John Soteriou, sister Ann Greer, brothers Joe Ferguson and Robert Ferguson and several nieces and nephews.
“ Aunt” Nancy will be remembered by her family and friends for always having a kind word, doing something nice for somebody else, sewing blankets and quilts for newborns in the extended family, personalizing gifts at Christmas and birthdays, and always there to listen. The world is a better place for Nancy having been here.
