Michael "Pawpaw" McCullough

Mike was born in Brownwood, Texas on May 20, 1946 and graduated from Brownwood High School in 1964. He served in the Army for three years where he was stationed in Germany. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1974. While attending the University of Texas, he met his wife, Barbara. They married in 1972 in Galveston, TX and were married for over 50 years. Mike worked for the Department of Defense in the Acquisition and Contracting Division as a price analyst and later a branch manager. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, moved on to Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, and finally to Carswell AFB in Fort Worth. He retired in 2014 at the end of a career of 39 years.

Mike and Barbara were the proud parents of three children: Scott, Sara and Greg. All three were born during their years in San Antonio and were raised during their formative years in the Episcopal Church. Mike was very passionate about his family and freely gave his time, resources, and advice, always willing to help as much as he could. He was always in attendance at events that his children, and later his grandchildren, participated in, whether sports, concerts, plays, or award ceremonies. An avid sports fan himself, he loved coaching and managing youth sports. He coached baseball and soccer for many of Scott’s, Sara’s, and Greg’s teams. His players, and even parents, complimented his coaching style and fairness. He was on the committee that helped put soccer as a sport in Crowley High School in 1988. Besides his kids’ teams, he was also a huge Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan. On Sundays, the family would watch the Cowboys on TV, and from time to time, they would pack their cooler and head out to the Rangers ballpark.

Mike was also happy to be part of any activities that enabled him to spend time with his family. He presided over countless dinners where the family was celebrating somebody’s birthday, an award, or another special occasion. The whole family went on numerous vacations together, usually involving a caravan of multiple cars, with the lead car driven by Mike. These vacations helped to create many wonderful memories.

Mike had lots of special interests. He enjoyed watching movies, playing games, reading action novels, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, and planting a vegetable garden each year. He also collected many college hats (starting with the University of Texas). He loved wearing t-shirts and jerseys the kids and grandkids would bring him from whichever college they were attending.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Georgia McCullough, and his father, Victor McCullough. Those who remain to cherish his memory and continue his legacy are his wife, Barbara; son, Scott (Nicole); daughter, Sara (Billy); son, Greg (Yolanda); grandchildren: Koli, Kaden, Maxwell, Tyler, Austin, Ava, Grayson, Trey and Brandon; sister, Vickie (Bill); brother-in-law, Johnny; nephew, Duane; and niece, April.
