Born on May 4, 1934, near Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Joyce Walker Stevenson was the fourth of five children of Orene Elizabeth and O.W. Walker. She grew up in and around Everman on her parents’ dairy farm. She married Bill Stevenson in 1951. In their 69 years of marriage, Joyce and Bill lived in 5 states, moving often in support of Bill’s career in environmental science. After raising 3 children, Joyce worked as an accountant for many years, primarily at Parker Chiropractic Foundation. After retirement, she volunteered at the Promises Center of First Baptist Church of Burleson and was the treasurer of her women’s Sunday School class for several years. Joyce was an avid reader, an aspiring photographer, and a hopeful gardener! She had a keen mathematical mind, which made her a great baker and a talented amateur house designer. She drew up numerous plans and built her favorite on the Stevenson family property outside of Crowley. She and Bill lived there for 20 years.
Joyce lived up to her name- joyful, happy, positive, and strong, always busy on several projects. She was an active and fun-loving grandmother who taught the children to play hopscotch, jump rope, and ride bikes and scooters well into her 80s. Joyce is dearly loved and cherished by God and by all who know her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and her brothers, Ray and Ivan Walker.
She has two sisters, Laverne Gardner and Pat Moore, a brother-in-law, Mackey Moore, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Walker, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She has three children, Deborah Walker (Greg), Larry Stevenson (Allison), and Donna Archuleta. Her four grandchildren are Jared Archuleta (Jennifer), Seth Archuleta, Russell Walker and Allison Cutler (Andrew). She also has three great-grandchildren, Tristan and Alex Archuleta and Greyson Cutler.
