Geraldine Dewitt Edwards, cherished aunt and friend, gracefully departed this life on December 7 , 2024 at the age of 99. She began her life on April 18, 1925, Shawnee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Bertha Nell Owens and Charles Christopher Dewitt, the youngest of four girls. Her Grandfather Owens (born in Scotland) would have adopted her for his own but her parents did not agree.
She began her work career on a Plug in Board in Shawnee with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company , answering "Operator" when a call came in. She later worked in Fort Worth, Texas where she worked in drafting and maintaining maps of the property of Southwestern Bell. After a pause in her career she worked for Mountain Bell Telephone in Durango, Colorado where she fell in love with skiing. She worked all over the state of Colorado as a supervisor for Mountain Bell where she retired in 1982. She moved back to Oklahoma to assist family and there a friend introduced her to her cousin. It must have been love at first sight because she moved to Rancho Cordova, California, and married Alfred W. Edwards on April 22, 1983. This marriage gave her, her the first child, her step-son Jeff, his wife June and their daughter Janelle. She and A. W. travelled and cruised the world, visiting such places as Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Russia, China, Korea and many other spots in the world.
Gerrie (she did not like the name Geraldine) was very talented. She liked oil painting, skinnting, gold, and reading. She was a very accomplished pianist and sang solos in church. She and her sisters (Bertha Mae, Hazel, and Doris) had many fun times together. Nant Gerrie was dearly loved by her two nieces, Eleise Garrett and Barbara Wellman. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
The family invites friends and relatives to a celebration of her life on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 1pm at Laurel Land Funeral Home. The family deeply appreciates your love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.
