FORT WORTH -- Dorothy Allene Payne Smith has completed her earthly journey to join those who had gone before her into everlasting eternity. She was a native of Fort Worth, born October 7, 1923 to Eula Johnson and James L. Payne.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1206 Throckmorton St., Fort Worth. The family will receive friends in the parish hall after the Mass.
Interment: Mrs. Smith will be laid to rest in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park. Visitation: The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, with a rosary at 2 p.m.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Humane Society of North Texas, 1840 E. Lancaster, Fort Worth, Texas 76103.
As a child Dorothy lived and attended schools in Newark and Fort Worth. Graduating from Paschal High School in 1940. She married Pedro Macias in 1941 before he went to Pearl Harbor, HI. Their child was Cecelia Macias Gilbreath.
Dorothy married Paul Smith in 1944 after his return from service in Africa and Italy in WWII. They were married for 66 years before his death. Their children were Fr. Dennis Smith and Dr. Vicki Nejtek.
Dorothy worked in the bomber plant in Grand Prairie during WWII. After the war she became a housewife and mother. She worked as a waitress and cashier at the Paris Coffee Shop with her husband Paul Smith and father-in-law
She was a volunteer at Saint Joseph Hospital and also served at Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. Dorothy had an infectious sense of humor and hearty laugh, she loved to play scrabble, garden and tap danced at the National Tap Dance Day Extravaganza. She had been a member of St. Patrick Cathedral since 1977.
The family gives a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Janice Kenbl for her loving care during her final months and the compassionate care by Universal Hospice especially Delmy who personally cared for her.
Survivors: She is survived by her devoted children, Cecelia Gilbreath and husband Roy, Fr. Dennis Smith, and Dr. Vicki Nejtek and husband Bink; grandchildren, Richard Gilbreath and Lisa Tyrrell, great-grandsons, Charles and Patrick Gilbreath; great-granddaughter, Erin Tyrrell; and her precious little companions, Nipper and Ginger.
