Diane was the first child born to Dr. Quentin E. Barber and Stella Mae Daniel on May 19, 1942, in
Houston, Texas. She graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth and received both bachelor and
master's degrees, with honors, in home economics from Texas Christian University. She loved teaching
and passing those skills on to students at both Everman and Crowley High Schools. Diane appreciated
her academic and professional achievements but her greatest focus was the Lord and her family.
On June 9, 1961, Diane married Joseph C. Smith, and after 46 years of marriage he preceded her in
death in 2007. Jesus Christ was the foundation of Diane's life, marriage, and family. They raised their
daughters, Melissa and Karen, with a Christian foundation, which has now been passed down to two
additional generations. Diane was an involved, supportive mother who loved unconditionally. She spent
quality time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren leaving special memories
treasured by all.
Diane had a beautiful voice and used it to worship God for decades. She and Joe were involved in lay
witness missions and bible studies. Diane taught children in Sunday School classes, vacation bible school, and church camps for years. As MS altered her physical abilities over time, she had wonderful caregivers who helped her stay active and she found new ways to show God's love to those around her. When she couldn't drive, she became a true prayer warrior. When she couldn't walk, she started a ministry sending cards of encouragement and love. When she couldn't live independently, she found a new church home serving and substitute teaching in an adult Sunday School class. When her health forced her to move to a long-term care facility, she was a light of grace and love to the staff who paid heartfelt tributes to her on her last day.
She is survived by her loving family including children Mike and Melissa Sherman of Granbury, and JD
and Karen Davis of Aledo; grandchildren Greg and Meredith Corrigan, Nathan and Mallory Milligan,
Madelyn Sherman, Max Davis, and Emma Davis; great-grandchildren John, Graham, and Joseph
Corrigan; siblings Dana and Nancy Barber, Candis Barber, Daniel Barber, and Jeanelle Roberts; and
numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and her uncle Liston Barber of Martins Mill.
