Alex Eugene Barnett was born on June 26, 1927 in Steppville, Alabama, the son of Alex Percy Barnett and Ada (Mickle) Barnett. Gene went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2021 at the age of 94 of natural causes.
Gene was the oldest of six children. In his youth, he helped on the family farm cultivating and harvesting cotton. During this time, Gene learned to play the guitar, harmonica and spoons with the help of his mom, Ada. Gene joined the Marines at the age of 18 in September 1945. He served as a guard at the end of World War II. The time he spent hunting during his youth was put to good use in the Marines where he became an expert marksman. He was honorably discharged from the Marines on October 22, 1946. After mustering out of the military, Gene moved to Texas for a job at Ling Temco Vought (LTV).
Gene was married on November 25, 1949 to Addie Pearl Baker who he met at her high school dance while he was singing and playing in the band for the dance. It was love at first sight. The couple moved to Arlington, Texas to raise their three children. Upon their retirement from LTV, they moved to “The Farm” located in Whitehouse, Texas. The Farm consisted of 10 acres where they grew lots of produce for themselves, as well as for sale by Gene in nearby Tyler. On family visits to the Farm, everyone enjoyed the tree swing, playing dominoes, croquet, the marble game, spades and climbing aboard the tractor for a ride around the farm.
Gene's passion was to sing and write songs. Through the years he performed on KRLD, The Farr Best Theater and later with friends in an informal group. He also had a love for finding great deals and often could be found shopping garage sales in the area.
Gene loved his wife and family and was grateful for the love, support and kindness he found after moving to his final home at Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in March 2021. His favorite pastime at Grandview was playing, and frequently winning Bingo.
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years Addie, his parents Percy and Ada Barnett, his one brother Charley Barnett, and three sisters, Norma Faye Herron, Willie Dee Underwood and Thelma Lotz, and one great grandchild Justice Parrish.
Gene is survived by his sister Peggy Walker; his three children, Dale Barnett and his wife Vivian; Deborah Parrish and her husband Bruce; and Linda Beeler and her husband Jim. Gene was blessed with eleven Grandchildren, twenty one Great Grandchildren, ten Great-Great Grandchildren and his precious little dog Skipper.
Gene's family would like to thank all of the many caregivers from Right at Home and Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center - you were all family to him.
Viewing will be one hour before services. Services will be at Monday December 20, 2021 at 2:00pm at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 7100 Crowley Rd. Fort Worth, Texas 76134.
