HELEN L. MERZ, 93, passed away on Monday evening, Monday Dec 2, 2024. She was born June 27, 1931 in Muncie, Indiana to Inez and Ivan Humbert. Helen graduated from Royerton HS, Ball State University, and matriculated with her Masters in Ed. from St Francis, Fort Wayne. She retired in 1994 after working as an elementary teacher for 41 years mostly in Fort Wayne Community Schools. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Alpha Omicron Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Wayne Merz; her parents; her sisters, Dorothy Pursley, Vera Gillen, and Barbara Mixell; and brother, Robert Humbert.
Surviving are her sons, Jay (Crystal) Merz of Aromas, CA and John (Barbara) Merz of Fort Wayne; sisters, Rosemary Martin of Muncie, Nancy Green of Wooster, OH; and brother, David (Janet) Humbert of Fishers; close friends, Jill Sackash and Kathy (Tom) Senesac; grandchildren, Jason (Karla) Merz, Camille (Alexander) Merose, Clint Ahlersmeyer, and Angel Freeman; and Godson, Mac (Sadie) Schmidt; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Helen’s life revolved around loving family, helping children and taking care of animals.
Service is 11am Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 729 W. Washington Blvd.,Fort Wayne, IN with calling one hour prior. Pastor Paul Offhaus officiating. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Monday, Dec. 9, 2024 at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Pine Valley Park, 1320 E. Dupont Road, Fort Wayne, IN. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
