BETTY LOUISE KIRKMAN, 96, of Fort Wayne, died on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at her home. Born May 26, 1926 in Lafayette, IN, she was the daughter of late Francis and Edith (Batchelor) Carter. She married the late James Franklin Kirkman II in 1945. She was a member of Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church. Together, they promoted western style square dancing for 33 years, often serving as the president of their clubs. Betty was the two-time recipient of the Special Mission Recognition award from the United Women of Faith. She was also instrumental in Mission Stitchers and organizing the church rummage sales for several decades. A caretaker to all, she loved her family and her four-legged friends too. Surviving is her son Larry G. (Penny) Kirkman, of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her oldest son, James Kirkman IIl, her only brother and two grandchildren. Funeral service is at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Taylor Chapel Church, 10145 Maysville Road, FTW, 46835. Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Taylor Chapel. Burial in Bowers Cemetery. Preferred memorials to Humane Fort Wayne animal shelter.
