John Palmer Hamill, 79 of Fort Smith, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. He was born on September 15, 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Charles T. Byrd Sr. and Winifred Hamill. John was the former owner of John’s Gun and Tackle, and had also worked for Samsonite Table and Chair for a number of years. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, a life member of both the NRA and the Old Fort Gun Club. John was a great father, a wonderful husband, and he was good at telling bad jokes! In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a brother, Charles T. Byrd, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Candi, of the home; his daughter, Sara Galbach (Andy) of Fort Smith; two sons, Todd Hamill (Sheila) of Phoenix, AZ and Brian Hamill (Suzi) of Stafford, VA; a brother, Robert Hamill of Birmingham, AL and three grandchildren, Max Hamill, Hannah Hamill and Toni Hamill.
A committal service and inurnment of ashes will be held in the memorial garden of St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall of the church. Cremation is under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
