Alan A. Garner, 56, of Fort Smith, died December 9, 2012 in Fort Smith. He was born March 27, 1956 in Nkana, Zambia to Frank Alan and Doreen Mary Erica Moorecraft Garner. Alan was educated in England and traveled throughout Europe and the Scandinavian countries. He spent a summer in Russia and spoke of selling western style jeans on the square of what is now known as Saint Petersburg. His professional career, which started as a Chartered Accountant in England, ultimately took him literally throughout the world. He worked with Eaton and BorgWarner in Germany and was the Operations Manager of a large manufacturing facility in Markdorf. He was responsible for establishing manufacturing facilities and or Joint Ventures in Thailand, India, China, Australia, and Brazil. He was the General Manager for North America and Europe of SLW Automotive, Inc. where he was passionate about the opportunities that SLW Automotive presented, not to him, but to the employees and the area in general. Alan was an avid sports fan and played and followed Rugby, Soccer, and Cricket throughout his life. Alan and wife Birgit along with their Golden Retriever, Jack loved to travel down to the Southwestern Florida Gulf Coast to take their boat “AyBees Pride” out to the small islands surrounding Southern Florida.
He is survived by his wife Birgit Garner of the Home; one son, Christian Becker of Germany; one sister Erika Clarke of England; and one brother, Philip Garner of South Africa.
To celebrate his life there will be a reception on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from 4-6 PM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Services and cremation are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
