It is with great sadness and cherished memories that we share the news of Mona Joy Nelson’s (nee: Morstad) passing on May 20, 2024 following her courageous battle with congenital heart failure at the age of 95.
Mona is survived by her children; Joy (Henry) Tunke, Janice (Randy) Johnson, Ken (Alison) Nelson, and Matt (Dawn) Nelson, as well as eight wonderful grandchildren and six amazing great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Ray G A Nelson.
Mona grew up on a grain farm near Simmie, Saskatchewan before moving to Calgary at age 14. She lived with her older brother, Galen until her parents moved to Calgary a few months later. Mona attended Crescent Heights High School until she enrolled into secretarial school. Following graduation, Mona worked at Texaco Oil Company. She enjoyed being in the workforce and made many friends while there. Ray and Mona met and marries in 1952 and began starting their family soon after. Their marriage started farming near Bittern Lake, but eventually settled in Calgary before moving on to Saskatoon in 1970, Kelowna in 1977, and finally Strathmore in 2006.
With her natural nurturing spirit, Mona took great pride in raising her family, always making sure they were well fed, healthy, and happy. She demonstrated her devotion by being there through the good times and the bad.
Mona enjoyed volunteer work, travelling, knitting, petit point, golfing, crocheting, reading, baking, watching curling, and cooking shows, but most of all being with family and friends. She had a continuous thirst for knowledge, her favourite phrase being “I wonder why”.
When she was in her 80’s she received her first iPad, so excited to have such a handy device to help her answer all her questions. As it turned out, the iPad became a valuable source of entertainment and communication as well. How quickly she mastered the device at her age was quite impressive.
Mona was known as a thoughtful, kind, and loving person who went above and beyond to help others. Her bright smile and warm embrace will never be forgotten. The grace and humor she possessed shone through right to the end.
Thank you to all the wonderful and kind staff at the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital who helped care for Mona in her final days.
As per her wishes, there will not be a service at this time.
