With broken hearts, but with endless gratitude for her life, the family of Mary Annie Myers announces her passing on May 25th, just days before her 91st birthday. Surrounded by her children, Jeanne Reynolds (Norman) of Florence, Massachusetts, Donna Myers of Edmonton, Wayne Myers (Marie) of Sherwood Park, and Lois Gordon (Skip) of Bremner, she passed away peacefully in her own home, where she still lived independently. Mom was born in Bellevue, Alberta in 1926. She moved to the Pickardville area where she met Elmer Myers. They married in 1941. The young couple farmed two quarter sections at Arvilla. In 1948, they moved to a dairy farm at Bremner. There Mom farmed alongside her husband and later her son until her retirement in her early 70’s. In 1995 she finally built her dream home and landscaped her beautiful yard.
As a farmer’s wife Mom had many responsibilities and her never-say-die attitude meant that she took on projects that would have daunted a strapping man. On top of her usual household chores, she also raised and butchered chickens, turkeys, geese, and ducks; grew and preserved a huge garden of vegetables; sold eggs; washed dairy equipment every day; took her turn on the swather and combine at harvest time; was adept at fixing a leaky roof or a troublesome pump; was an active member of the local chapter of the Farm Women of Alberta; and chauffeured her four children to a variety of music, dance, and skating lessons. She also found time to knit, sew, crochet, cross-stitch, decorate, landscape, and tend a large flower garden.
We are convinced that had Mom been given the chance, she would have made a fine engineer as she was able to visualize any project in its planning stage. Estimating the required amount of lumber, wallpaper, fabric, or upholstery within a few inches of what was needed was her specialty. She could handle a miter saw or a sewing machine with equal ease. She was her children’s most enthusiastic cheerleader and unfailing supporter. Her skills as a grandmother were unmatched, and she loved to play cribbage and 31 with her grandchildren.
Mom’s many trips took her across much of the United States, as far north as Alaska and Tuktoyaktuk, and as far east as the Maritimes. With her oldest daughter, she travelled to Germany for her 66th birthday. She took many extended trips to Virginia to visit her daughter Jeanne and her family. There she enjoyed southern hospitality and made many new friends. But the ultimate freedom get-aways for Mom and her friends, Eunice and Dorothy, were spontaneous road trips.
In addition to her four children, Mom is survived by one brother, Les Kendrick of Pickardville, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends Eunice Atmore, and Dorothy Lorencz. She was predeceased by her husband Elmer and three brothers; Bill, Bert, and Morris. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of her life is planned for later this summer. Mom lived a rich and full life. She was much loved and will be missed every day. The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care and support provided by Dr. Annette Begalke and Nurse Bonnie Lavigne.
