Henry Castro was my one and only grandfather. I grew up in northern VA and would visit my grandparents in Florida or see them on thanksgiving at my Ti-Ti Michelle’s house in Lynchburg. When I was 12, we moved to Florida. In high school, I gained interest in making clothes. One day at my grandparents house I told my grandpa this and he immediately got out a bunch of paper bags, flattened them, and started drawing on them, showing me how to draft patterns. As he did this, he shared with me some memories he had of working in the textile industry in NYC and working for a reputable fashion designer. I still make clothes to this day, making clothes for my daughter and other young family members. My grandpa serviced and fixed sewing machines, and in recent years, even mine. 

During a summer while I was in college, I worked in the same flea market he worked. He would visit me in the morning. I have two pairs of cowboy boots from the shop he worked that I still wear to this day.  

 When my daughter was born at 26 weeks, 3.5 months premature, my grandpa was one of only a handful of people able to visit and see her in the NICU in February 2020, before the COVID pandemic hit the US and hospitals locked down, not allowing visitors. 

I will always remember my grandpa’s voice, smile, and will miss him dearly.  ❤️

Dear Grandpa,  
As grandmas first granddaughter I know she would let me speak for her. She would want me to share a few words about Grandpa. I know grandma would of wanted to be there today , if only she knew. I know grandma would of gathered her strength and wore her best dress and prayed the entire time .
If she knew.  She would be holding onto her son , who I know she misses. Sundays we sipped coffee . Grandpa says i make a strong cup. But he still drank it. Grandpa and grandma always slept in different rooms. I always thought that was weird as a kid but as I got older , married and have kids.  I understand now. Although they each had their own space.  They always had each other's back. I have many stories about their relationship.  Witnessed many encounters they had together. I can hear grandma yelling Quique , which I always thought was spelled with a K. She loved that man. He always put her first. She would of been there today Grandpa,  I know you know this..  love you papa

Grandpas backyard garden.  His oasis. You can always find him the backyard . He loved dogs. The dog  in photo nickname was Obama. He also once caught a baby rabbit in his backyard and hid it from Grandma . He made a little bed for it in the laundry room after he washed the baby rabbit in the bathroom.  He was a fun Grandpa.

I didn't go to Radford. Grandpa wished I did but he also loved that I made my own path just like him. He taught me many things . Like how to hold a set of dominoes with one hand. He always won. He was many things,  he did it all . He can sell anything and everything.  He was kind and he was sharp.  He was quick witted and also slow to speak his mind. Careful with his words.  He was a great grandpa to me. He said enjoy the island life for me. So I will. And I invite you all to come visit me as well.

I can dream of the old days, life was beautiful then.
I remember, the time I knew what happiness was.
Let the memory live again.

My oldest son is 7 and he remembers grandpa. Everytime we visit FL. We make it a point to go hang out with great grandma and great grandpa . They threw flowers in the water and said prayers to help guide him home.

Loved near and far. Grandpa had many orange trees and other fruit trees in his backyard . You can always catch him outside climbing a ladder tending to his trees or just outside soaking up the sun.

Daylight, I must wait for the sun rise,
I must think of a new life, and I mustn't give in.
When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too,
And a new day will begin.

Grandpa would compare Guam to his memories of Puerto Rico. He shared that he left PR when he was 13 years old and moved to New York. God has blessed him with a beautiful long life.

Apart but never in Heart.  Cherished memories with grandpa.  Oranges represent his love for his garden. He had many orange trees in his backyard.

He was the best grandpa.  Accompanying him on the weekends to the flea market was a core memory growing up. Everyone knew him . All the vendors loved him.
