Luis was born on February 3, 1957, in Ponce, Puerto Rico to parents José Angel Vargas and Carmen Esther Vargas, alongside his older brother, José Angel Vargas Jr. and his younger sister, Carmen (Vargas) Garriga. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mrs. Susana Antigua Vargas and his children, Luis Estevan, Alberto Gabriel, Veronica Janitza (Paez), and Bethsaida Noemi (Santiago). He is also survived by his children-in-law, Rachael (Vargas) Slazinik, Pablo Paez, and Daniel Santiago.
Luis attended Eastern District High School in Brooklyn, NY, Slippery Rock State University in Slippery Rock, PA, and attained a Master's Degree in International Relations from Troy State University, in Troy, AL.
Shortly after his educational pursuits, he became an officer in the United States Air Force where he dedicated the majority of his life to intelligence operations. Luis became a part of CAJIT - the Central American Joint Intelligence Team, where he briefed high level operators and officers ahead of operations and missions. He contributed greatly to the successes of military operations in the "Just Cause" military conflict against Manual Noriega (Panama - 1989) and "Desert Shield" (Kuwait & Saudi Arabia - 1991). Luis was a huge asset to his department's success and was quickly promoted through the ranks. He retired as a Major with full honors.
Luis had an immense love for animals and adopted many pets over his lifetime. Fluffy, who was a big white rabbit. Sparky, who was a fun, rambunctious boxer mix. Precious, a silver haired Yorkie who was the love of his life and saw him through some of his most vulnerable moments. And Max, a Yorkie mix who was Luis’ heart and helped him through his final days with us.
Luis will be remembered for his love of his family, his dedication to his country, his love for animals, and his vibrant and funny personality. His family will forever be grateful for the love, the sacrifices, and the wonderful memories he was able to give to them.
A visitation for Luis will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park, 12777 State Road 82, Fort Myers, FL 33913, followed by a graveside service with Military Honors from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
