John Roberts, 97, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away into God’s graces, surrounded by loving family and friends on November 9th, 2021.John was the son of John and Lela Roberts, and was raised by a single mother as his father passed away when he was a year old. Throughout John’s life he wore many hats. He started working at a very young age delivering newspapers to help his mother. Then he went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific. After being honorably discharged, he then went on to manage many well-known restaurants such as: Steak n Shake, Frisch’s Big Boy and Key West Shrimp House. After a successful career in Management, John went on to retirement and moved to sunny Florida in the 80’s.
During retirement, John devoted his time and love into volunteering and being a staple member within his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2596. As a Knight John made his fourth degree and is also a past grand knight. He managed the Knights of Columbus Hall, where he served many functions as well as his favorite, calling BINGO. He also filled the tall, black boots and fluffy cotton tails of Santa and the Easter bunny at the Edison Mall in Ft. Myers for many years. John also returned to the job of his younger days while in retirement delivering the News Press with his wife and daughters on occasion too. John was always very hard working and willing to help anyone whenever he was able.
John was a devout Catholic, praying the Rosary daily and continued attending Mass remotely after he was physically unable to attend in person. He was an active member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, serving in many roles. He ran the kitchen for many festivals hosted by St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. True to John’s nature, he loved spending time with his family. One of many of his beloved pastimes were playing cards with his grandchildren, laughing and joking with his root beer float in hand.
He is survived by his loving wife Rita Roberts and seven of his children. John(Robby), Patti, Pamela, Ed, Jeff, Mary and Rita. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. John is preceded in death by his parents, John & Lela Roberts, daughter Sharon, sisters, Ruth, Inez, and Lou. Also preceded by his brother Kenneth and granddaughter Hope.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church 5632 Sunrise Dr. Ft. Myers, FL 33919 on Thursday, December 2nd, at 10:00 am.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Grace Church Ft. Myers Shores, 14036 Matanzas Dr. Ft. Myers 33905, on Friday December 3rd at 11:00am with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local St. Vincent de Paul.
