On September 17,2022 Jack enjoyed a wonderful celebration of his 100th birthday with family from California, New England, Virginia, Texas and friends from Heritage Palms.
Jack was born in Los Angeles, California to John and Winifred (Drey) Sweeney. He was the oldest in a family of three. He had a younger brother Charles and sister Barbara. He grew up on a ranch in Valley Center, California where he attended school in a one room school house. His family moved back to Los Angeles and Jack attended and graduated from Santa Monica High school. He was drafted into the Army Air Force in 1942 where he served in India and China. He was assigned to weather station detail and he served with the “Flying Tigers” at two bases in China, during World War II.
After the war he returned to Los Angeles. He attended and graduated from UCLA on the GIBILL in 1949 with a BSME.
Jack married Joyce (Morrison) in 1950. They had four children Jack Jr., Jim, Jeffrey, Janette. His marriage ended and in the early sixties Jack left California and traveled cross country working various jobs in Texas, Missouri and Colorado. In 1969 he traveled east to work for General Electric in the Aircraft Engine Division in Lynn Massachusetts. While working for GE Jack worked at Alpha Romeo in Turin Italy and Naples Italy.
Back in the US in 1975 he bought a condo in Melrose Mass where he met Anne. They were married in 1980. They lived in Melrose until 2002 when they both retired. They bought a home near a lake in Laconia, NH and split their time between NH and The Landings in Fort Myers, Florida. Wanting a larger home, they moved to Heritage Palms in 2004.
Jack had many interests. He loved playing golf for most of his life. And he particularly enjoyed studying and investing in the stock market.
Jack is survived by his wife Anne Marie (Smith) Sweeney, his son Jack and wife Lynnda, son James and daughter Janette, eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Jack’s son Jeffrey passed away prior to his death.
A memorial service in honor of Jack will be held at 10am on March 28, 2023 at St John XXIII Catholic Church, 13060 Palomino Lane, Fort Myers. A reception to follow at The Lodge at Heritage Palms.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory can be made to Heritage Palms Veterans Association, 10420 Washingtonia Palm Way, Fort Myers, FL 33966 or the charity of your choice.
