Carolyn M. Meeks died peacefully in her sleep on February 19, 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida at the age of 84.
Carolyn was born May 9, 1927 in Sumter, South Carolina to Samuel M. Hunter III and Carrie M. Hunter . She was preceded in death by her mother and father; son Jeff Whatley; husband Richard W. Meeks and brother Sam M. Hunter.
She is survived by her daughter Becky Bartos (Mike), grandson Michael Bartos and granddaughter Kristen Bartos all of Fort Myers; one brother William M. Hunter (Barbara) of Greenville, South Carolina.
Carolyn graduated from Greenville High School before attending Auburn University where she earned her Bachelors of Science degree. She married T. J. Whatley in 1948 and began teaching in and around Dothan, Alabama. In 1951 she earned her pilots license. The winters were “too cold” so she and T moved to Fort Myers in 1954. She soon began teaching physical Education at Fort Myers High School, while also earning a master’s degree. Carolyn remained there for 33 years where she educated many Fort Myers students. In addition to teaching, she coached several girls sports teams including softball and tennis and particularly enjoyed being the cheerleading sponsor. Carolyn was very adventurous. After retirement she and her husband Richard traveled to many places including Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm Thursday February 23, 2012 at Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park with Funeral Services at 2:00 pm Friday at the Funeral Home.
