Patsy May Hawkes

Patsy was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to a pioneer family, on December 19, 1939.

Surviving are her daughter Amy Hawkes Campbell; son-in-law Scott H Campbell; son Larry Hawkes, her sisters Phyllis Dinsmore and Nancy Lawrence; her uncle Wade Setliff; granddaughter Jessica Campbell; grandsons, Jayden Campbell and Ezra Hawkes; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Roger T. Hawkes; her grandparents Wallace and Nell Setliff; her mother Nancy Setliff May; her Father Francis May; her brother Ed May; her Aunts Terrie Sue Setliff, Bobbie Ivey, Ruth Fletcher, her uncles Truman Setliffe, Pete Setliff and Ralph Setliff.

After graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School, she attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) in Wilson, NC where she was selected as Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. Following graduation, she worked for a year as a youth director in Winston-Salem, NC and then returned to Fort Lauderdale to work as a social worker in the Florida Department of Public Welfare.

“Patsy’s Posey’s” a home-based floral design business, was formed so she could stay closer to home while raising her kids. She created floral designs for parties, weddings and private businesses throughout Broward County until she retired in 1998.

Patsy was always active in the community, both through her children’s activities and through other organizations including holding offices in the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and volunteer work at the Museum of Discovery and Science. She was selected for Outstanding Young Women of America in 1972.

Patsy also volunteered at the Bonnet House; she was Chairman for the Bonnet House Cookbook “Entirely Entertaining in the Bonnet House Style”. She is also a past President of the Bonnet House Alliance.

Patsy was an active member of the Cystic Fibrosis Gold Coast Guild. In addition to holding an officer position on the Board of Directors for more than 10 years, she was the 2001-2002 Vice President of the Ways and Means Committee, and she twice co-chaired the Cystic Fibrosis “Bountiful Boutique”.

Patsy also volunteered with Pinion, Inc., benefiting the Special Olympics Broward County and its Athletes.

Patsy had a passion for family, friends and tennis. She was always a voracious reader and loved to travel.

Patsy will forever be missed and always remembered. When butterflies appear, we know you are near.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 at the KRAEER-FAIRCHILD FUNERAL HOME, 4061 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. Patsy's funeral service will commence at Noon at the funeral home on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Burial will take place privately in Evergreen Cemetery.
