I met Mary in the 80s. She introduced me to her cousin Richard Smith. I struggled not to meet him. He was 10 years older than me and had been married multiple times. However it was pretty much love at first sight. Had Richard Dana Smith jr. Now he had a son Wolf Winter Smith. Had it not been for Mary insistence none of this would have happened !  We first met when her Scottie Debonair arrived on my porch. I also had scotties so it brought us all together. We had so many connections!  I am ever grateful and tho we didn’t see each other for many years Mary was instrumental in forming my family. I ❤️You Mary. Sail on and see me later  😘

Mary and Joey will be deeply missed. Mary bought my husbands practice as a orthopedic surgeon in bad axe Michigan .  Joey ‘a barbecue sauce and Mary’s cooking was always a must. They are in my heart and thoughts .

I first met Mary and Joe when they joined us for Taoist Tai Chi® arts classes almost a decade ago.  I remember Joe’s smile and the twinkle, with perhaps a touch of mischief in Mary’s eyes as she shared, they were from Bad Axe Michigan.  It was not the last time she got a laugh about the fun name of their hometown, or the last time she made us laugh.

As winter residents to Key Largo they returned year after year with the annual snowbird migration.   In class Joe and Mary complimented each other; yin and yang, equal and opposite.  We missed Joe’s quiet, gentle ways when he found other interests during their winter stays.

With her exuberance and big smile, we continued to see Mary each year.  A retired orthopedic surgeon working daily on her own personal physical challenges, she was fascinated by tai chi and how it helped her move pain free…when she remembered to be patient!   She inspired others with her willingness to share her professional knowledge and personal tai chi story during Open Houses and classes.  She helped expand our understanding about our body’s physiology as it relates to our physical tai chi movement. 

I am thankful our paths crossed, for the happy memories and hope others in our organization will join me in honoring their memory during our All-Souls Festival later this year.

Farewell Mary and Joe, but not forgotten.

I did not know much about Mary and Joe’s life together but their sudden and horrible passing left me, as all of Mary’s Tai Chi friends, shocked and speechless. 
She was a beautiful and brave soul and I will miss her and her shining energy, each winter, as our snowbirds bring new life to our classes. 
My heart goes out to her family and Gunner. Rest In Peace together Mary and Joe 💞

Brien and I are very, very saddened to hear of Joe and Mary's passing; we shed tears and shared memories, but the feeling of heartache refuses to go away. They were both such special people, who loved each other very much and so fun to be around. We only wish we could've spent more time together. I will always remember Mary’s cheerful smile and her willingness to share her medical knowledge with our tai chi class when she was in Key Largo, Florida.  She will be missed.

I worked at Scheurer Hospital. What an excellent, caring, fun physician she was. Wanted to take me sailing and eat sushi to which I declined. 😄.  She was much braver and energetic than I.  Her eyes always sparkled when speaking of Joey.  
You have my deepest sympathy and prayers to get through this great loss.  We lost two wonderful people. 

Maria and I were shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of Mary and Joe. They were our winter neighbors  in the Buttonwood Bay community since 2013.  
How do you come to terms with the sudden loss of two wonderful, kind, compassionate and caring people who loved life except to know that they are together forever.  
We will miss Mary's stories, cooking , medical advise and opera singing and Joe's stories, barbequing, and always ready to help attitude.  Joe and I would always discuss procedures and options when I was working on my car, boat or a project and Mary would always be there for help, advise and fun. 
Mary and Joe were an asset to our community and they will be sorely missed!

I am so sorry about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of these two such special people.  Although I didn't know them well they were always smiling and full of life.  We met through their great little dog, Gunner.  I had a very shy Doberman, Zoe, who was afraid of many of the other dogs at Buttonwood.  But she took right to Gunner and he was very sweet with her.  Of course, the humans always chatted for awhile while the dogs were greeting each other.  I always loved talking with Mary and Joe.  Such interesting people.  They will be missed by many.  My sincere condolences to their families.  What a tragedy.


For all of us who knew Joe and Mary we now have a huge hole in our hearts. Joe and Mary were a special couple that both freely and sincerely gave care, help and motivation without expectation. Joe and Mary brought beauty, diversity and joy to our lives. The “BWB family” already miss the mischievous twinkle in Joe’s eyes when he smiled and Mary’s heartfelt laugh. We treasure the memories that will help to heal the ache in our hearts. Our love and prayers go out to family and friends left behind. Give Gunner and extra pat and treat for us. 

Mary and Joe were a delight in our little Community in South Florida. Their smiles were sure to bring out one of your own and with little Gunner , they made a beautiful trio. I have many memories of Mary, especially sitting at sunset and telling stories of days gone by that would have both of us in stiches, sometimes. Or doing tai chi with our group. Mary would be asked to speak of the human physiology to the class and she would graciously stand up there talking and entertaining us with her good humor. I cut the tip of my finger once. I ran to Mary because i knew that she would take care of me. And she did that with many others in our community as well, she was always ready to lend a hand. We all miss her very much, her wit, her wisdom and her beautiful sense of humor. We miss the glint in her eye when she smiled. We miss them them both.
Rest in Peace, my beautiful friends, we will see you in the Kingdom.

We were heartbroken to hear the news of Mary and Joe.  We enjoyed them so much in Key Largo even  though we had just gotten to know Joe the last few years.  We had a few things in common with them including being from Michigan, the love of sailing in our Michigan waters, (they even had their new mast made in Suttons Bay, a half mile from  where we live.)   Greg loved that they were "Joseph and Mary" and even our dog is named Joey, which Joe loved.  Our deepest sympathy goes out to Laura and their whole extended family.  May God grant you peace and healing.
